So my solution to this problem is to use the built in buddy list manager that comes as part of the xmpp protocol to manage my trust relations in social networks. You can read about it on anders.conbere.org, and I've got most of a webservice written in django to handle this (I would rather it was written in something more light weight like twisted, but I've been struggling there.) essentially it gives you a set of simplified web api's for authenticating and managing an xmpp roster via http.

I'm aware of Retroshare and I think it is a good idea but it doesn't change the fact that my friends aren't going to join *another* IM network when most of them already have Yahoo and MSN Messenger accounts. We need a solution that works with the networks that already exist as well as the possibility of building something from the ground up.

One of the issues, I think, is the advertising revenue. Facebook (I don't use the other two), by making you go to their webpage, at least gets the chance to expose you to some advertising---whether you block it or not is another thing. I find the same issue with RSS feeds, actually!

I've been writing about a new concept called Open Messaging (http://www.nakedyak.com/?cat=15) that we're working on a solution to. I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on the ideas.
Also, it's not a dumb thing to worry about. It's inevitable that more people will extend their online life, and worrying and posting about it now might go some way to making sure that it's all good sooner rather than later!

I'm really against all this "everything should run in your browser" stuff that's going on right now. I'd love to see these features implemented as some part of a future email client, but a client like this needs to run persistently on a machine, and as such it really needs to be fast and slim, something that no browser out there provides.
I'm actually most of the way through writing a little web service that allows you to use xmpp to manage your trust relations in a social networking tool. This would let you wander into any social network have it request your "roster" or buddy list and instantly connect you with the people on that list (since xmpp also provides for resources you can safely and easily keep different friends on different lists)
