In Pursuit of Mysteries: IE Sends Mozilla a New Cake for Firefox 3

  • Michael · 1 year ago
That looks like one heck of a delicious cake. Really nice of them!
  • Brian · 1 year ago
What, no dropping a large "e" on their lawn this time?
  • anon · 1 year ago
    The cake.

    It's a lie
  • Jaime · 1 year ago
    IT'S A TRAP!
  • Lucas · 1 year ago
The cake is probably poisoned. :D
  • Simon Foxe · 1 year ago
    ... There is no cake.
  • Al Billings · 1 year ago
  • Jack · 1 year ago
The irony of Sean giving you the cake is thick. :)
  • Al Billings · 1 year ago
Yes, Jack, I would agree. He got this big grin on his face and said, "I think I need to give this to you" when he came in with it. Seriously, I was just randomly near the door when he came in, passing by. John Lilly, our CEO, happened to be there too.

I think it is pretty ironic but I was also no longer on the IE team when the last cake was sent. That would have made it more ironic. :-)
  • x · 1 year ago
By the time the cake arrived, it already had several vulnerabilities in the wild.
  • The Dude Dean · 1 year ago
Thats the funniest thing I have seen in a long time. I would be very wary of boobie traps in that cake if I were the mozilla team.
  • Alex Vincent · 1 year ago
When they get around to releasing IE 8, you should return the favor with some apple pies or something.

    A la quirks mode.
  • Al Billings · 1 year ago
I'm just wondering where the cake from the Safari team is...
  • Alex Vincent · 1 year ago
Oh, and don't serve it for breakfast:
    http://www.poetv.com/video.php?vid=14462
  • Jeff · 1 year ago
Just send one back with the Firefox logo~

"Yes, it will do well. Thanks for the well wishes"

    ;)
  • pd · 1 year ago
This can't be. Microsoft is, err, evil innit? :)

Now if only they could work on their CSS support, starting with border-radius, they might get their karma heading back towards earth from down there near hell.
  • Anon · 1 year ago
Think how much that cake costs when the ultimately high-salaried IE coders used half a day baking that cake, another half decorating it...
  • Jean-Jacques Rousseau · 1 year ago
    Let them eat cake!
  • Jean-Jacques Rousseau · 1 year ago
    Let the eat cake!
  • web design company · 1 year ago
Yeah, dont eat it. You'll get a virus, and the cake is full of bugs. Also, the cake was made by fully ignoring cake-making standards.
  • Mauricio Feler Mateus · 1 year ago
    No cookies?
  • BoloRock · 1 year ago
Some things are a given. The cake most certainly will crash, reboot, do strange things you've not asked it to do.
  • eric · 1 year ago
The thing is... They don't tell you you can't remove the cake if you don't want it.

No matter what. The cake is integral to the entire operation of the thing.
  • Luis Albinati · 1 year ago
Did they give the recipe? Is it open source?
  • Micah · 1 year ago
The cake doesn't pass the Acid2 test, and if you eat it, your bowels will switch over to quirks mode.
  • Joao · 1 year ago
    comedia...Nice huhuhu
  • Anonymous · 1 year ago
The mozilla team should return the favor next time a Windows deadline gets missed by sending an almost identical cake that reads: "Congratulations on slipping!" :)
  • Jeremy Nicoll · 1 year ago
I second the notion of the "slipping" cake!
  • jwill · 1 year ago
Now if they had just sent a Mac book air to cut it with...
  • Ty Chocolate · 1 year ago
IE has to be good for SOMETHING.
  • Chris · 1 year ago
Nice gesture, I don't think Microsoft meant harm with this cake. It is becoming gentler thanks to Mozilla and Google.
  • Manny · 1 year ago
Hum! At least it didn't blow up.

But I bet once you remove the icing you're going to get the blue screen of death ;)
  • Paul · 1 year ago
I like the idea of returning the favor for IE8, but you should provide the recipe with yours! And coordinate with some plugin writers to send candles...
  • cynic · 1 year ago
You should be sending them a bunch of fortune cookies with Mozilla source code in it or a large cookie with the whole code :-)
  • schorsch68 · 1 year ago
    Congratulations to the Guinness-record.
Is scho alles recht geil, ne?
  • Anon A. Mus · 1 year ago
Reportedly, the cake crashed from not being able to render the frosting correctly ...
  • Darkk · 1 year ago
Honestly I thought it was nice The IE team sent them a cake. It shows good sportsmanship on their part in this competitive world of online browsers.

Kudos to The Firefox Team for the number of downloads and IE Team for the cake.

    Darkk
  • BillinDetroit · 1 year ago
Just say thank you. No need to bash MSFT ... you guys did a heck of a job. Coder to coder (not company to company) the cake is recognition of your achievements.

As mentioned, whenever they release a browser that is both innovative and standards compliant, send them a cake / invite them to a picnic ... something ... but recognize that they would have to fight management AND the code to do that. The pat on the back is warranted.

PS ... I didn't get read your email in time, but I got a look at the link on my Gmail reader and got my dl started before midnight. Barely. I was probably among the final few.

Congrats ... but next time, give us a bit more warning!
  • sir jorge · 1 year ago
i haven't downloaded firefox 3, they'll have to make me.

    But a cake?

    Now that's nice.
  • bluestix · 1 year ago
    Poison.

The oldest trick in the book.
  • Al Billings · 1 year ago
I thought the oldest trick involved a horse?
  • André Caribé · 1 year ago
    Where is the bomb? :P
Nice! Applause for IE Team and FF Team!

    No one asked yet but...

can we get a picture of the Firefox 2 cake? How brown is it?
  • Al Billings · 1 year ago
  • Karthik · 1 year ago
If i know Microsoft and Bill Gates,They probably got all the possible patents and Intellectual property rights on the Cake from the design, recipe, flavor to the cardboard box they mailed it in.
  • Al Billings · 1 year ago
    Karthik,

Did you miss the memo? Bill Gates has retired from Microsoft...

  • Bizhack · 1 year ago
The cake certainly looked a little bloated, its add-on didn't really go well with it and the whole thing fell apart when the Firefox team tried to eat it.

The ironic bit is congrats on SHIPPING. The m$ folks are more impressed w/ somebody hitting their SHIPPING date than w/ the software they wrote! :)

Has m$ EVER hit a shipping date? Or more importantly, has m$ ever hit a shipping date within the YEAR they published.

Nice reference to Fitt's Back Button in FF3 with the over-sized 'e' on the left.

I sure hope that when IE8 ships, Mozilla sends the IE8 team a cake with a gradient (RGBA) background.
  • Raphael · 1 year ago
Its the thought that counts. Grats to the mozilla team for getting the best browser currently available out to the masses!

O INTERNET EXPLORER é o melhor exemplo. Passamos anos usando a bosta do Internet Explorer 6.

Uso Windows, uso Linux, uso Mac OS, antes usava MSX, Amiga e vários outros computadores. O mundo da informática não é só Microsoft e ela não é nem tão boa e nem tão ruim... o Windows é muito bom para usar em casa, mas para navegar na Internet coloquem o INTERNET EXPLORER NO LIXO e usem FIREFOX !!!
  • Stacy · 1 year ago
    Lol, it's just sweet))
  • Walljet · 1 year ago
Is there a mac-version of this cake?

    Walljet.

You should accept cookies for the originating site only!
  • Not Just A PC Tech · 1 year ago
To be a Mac compatible cake it would have to have come from Intel.

But seriously, the only way they got away with using a semi-accurate IE logo on the cake was to have Bill G. retire. (Good thing he did cause that old cke looked horrid, not to mention deadly)
  • Veronica · 1 year ago
    Congratulations! You deserve this!

I think its time for Mozilla to send a followup cake to Microsoft. What do you guys think?
  • Al Billings · 1 year ago
They have to ship IE8 first...
  • Rodrigo · 1 year ago
    Was it poisoned?

  • Shelon Padmore · 1 year ago
    How nice of them!
  • Personal Trainer · 1 year ago
This is interesting... I would think that IE people would be scared. IE even on my vista PC is terrible compared to firefox. A cake probably has a secret spy camera in it!
  • Simon · 1 year ago
You guys @ Mozilla should send a cake with the Firefox Logo as well as send along the written recipe (source code) to MS when they release I.E 8 so they would get a cake in return as well as the "source code" to be able to modify hahahaha.

Now to get serious Well Done Microsoft of putting your differences behind you to send a cake out of good gesture. Why can't you Microsoft be nice yo more rivals. I guess this is just the stepping ground.

    Long Live FireFox!!!!!

  • SparcMan · 1 year ago
I'm concerned about the license agreement label they must have had to remove to open the cake box. There's no telling what the Mozilla team agreed to by opening that box!
  • ddr · 1 year ago
congrats to the mozilla on ff3 for my fav browser and a pat on the back to microsoft for being good sports

even though if i first saw it i would hold microsoft to a standard of poisoning the cake to get rid of competition (paranoia setting in)

anyway long live the mozilla team and best wishes to microsoft maybe you can dig your company out of its suck hole

  • Dita · 1 year ago
It's neat how they can make the ring around 'e' stand! I'd ask how, but I fear the cake is not open source :P

Great sense of humour, that cake is obviously a lie!
  • sumit · 1 year ago
    Funny thing
IE has good sense of humor.
  • JanR · 1 year ago
It is probably a genuine gesture. After all, if it weren't for Firefox's successes, the world would still be stuck with the tired IE6. There wouldn't be an IE Team - or version IE7 or the upcoming IE8. So the success of Firefox is probably job-security for the IE team. They have a lot to be thankful for :-)
  • Connor · 1 year ago
I hate firefox. i also hate internet explorer. i hate safari. i hate avant browser. The best browsers currently available are SeaMonkey and Netscape navigator > which sadly is not alive anymore. The cake has a bomb in it. it will go off when internet explorer 8 is released. I downloaded internet explorer 8 beta to see if they changed anything. they didn't same ol'IE.
  • smart_guy · 1 year ago
    FIREFOX !

Regrestration key come with the cake ???

Better not eat it before you get the security update
  • Ceol_Agus_Craic · 1 year ago
Maybe the cake is more useful than the browser! (or, perhaps, are there any worms inside the cake as well as the browser?!)
Make a "HCCP" control and you will get the response :D
  • HyperX-Systems · 1 year ago
ITS ALL A TRICK!! don't eat it once you do it will infect everything and they will use it to steal the source code of FF3!!!... oh wait... damn...
  • Nikunj Bhatt · 1 year ago
    is the cake genuine?
the cake may contain vulnerabilities like ie

what firefox team will send on ie8 launch?
(ans: may be a FIRED (dead) FOX.)
anyway, just kidding. ;), good sportsmanship bet ie and ff
  • Luther Snow · 1 year ago
Nice... I'm going to refrain from adding to the massive compilation of IE jokes, and just be happy that the cake made it on time for it's expected delivery date. For once, microsoft delivered something on time. Ain't that something?...
  • Ve · 1 year ago
